Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply following a deadly terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The Pahalgam Attack
On April 22, 2025, five militants attacked tourists in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Anantnag district, resulting in 26 deaths, including 25 Indian tourists and one local civilian, and injuring over 20 others. The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility, citing opposition to alleged demographic changes in Kashmir.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers segregated victims based on religion before opening fire. Indian intelligence identified Saifullah Kasuri, a top LeT commander, as the mastermind.
India's Response
In retaliation, India announced several measures:
-
Suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a key water-sharing agreement.
-
Closed the Attari–Wagah border crossing.
-
Revoked visas for Pakistani nationals and expelled Pakistani military attaches.
-
Reduced its diplomatic staff in Islamabad.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Pakistan's Reaction
Pakistan denied involvement in the attack and condemned the violence. In response to India's actions, Pakistan:
-
Suspended all bilateral treaties, including the 1972 Simla Agreement.
-
Closed its airspace to Indian flights.
-
Revoked visas for Indian nationals.
-
Warned that any interference with water flow under the Indus Waters Treaty would be considered an act of war.
Military Escalation
Following the attack, Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged gunfire along the Line of Control in the Leepa Valley. No casualties were reported, but the incident has heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The Guardian
