Zamzam Camp Massacre
On April 11, 2025, RSF and allied militias launched a brutal assault on the Zamzam displacement camp, home to approximately 700,000 internally displaced persons. The attack involved heavy weaponry, shelling, and targeted violence, resulting in the deaths of at least 400 civilians, including women and children. Nine humanitarian workers were also killed, and medical facilities were among the early targets. Survivors recount horrific scenes of mass killings, homes burned, and people targeted based on their ethnicity. The assault forced nearly half of the camp's residents to flee on foot to El Fasher or Tawila, with many dying from thirst en route. The Guardian
El Fasher Under Siege
El Fasher, a city sheltering over one million people, many of whom are displaced, is now under siege by RSF forces. Recent shelling of residential and market areas has resulted in more than 30 deaths and dozens of injuries. The RSF's campaign to seize control of the city has intensified, with fears that a full-scale assault could lead to devastating urban warfare and a new wave of mass displacement. Le Monde
Humanitarian Crisis Escalates
The United Nations reports that the forced and large-scale displacement of civilians in North Darfur is overwhelming aid operations and increasing civilian vulnerability. About 85% of the new arrivals are women, children, and older people, all in need of urgent assistance. They are currently located in various towns across Central and North Darfur. Al Zajeera
International Response
The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, expressed grave alarm over the attacks, stating, "I am appalled and gravely alarmed by reports emerging from Zamzam and Abu Shouk displacement camps as well as Al Fasher town in North Darfur." She emphasized the need for immediate cessation of hostilities and protection of civilians.
Despite the RSF's denial of involvement in atrocities at Zamzam Camp, humanitarian organizations have condemned the attacks as deliberate assaults on vulnerable civilians already facing famine. The RSF claims the camp was being used by army-aligned forces and has denied committing atrocities. Reuters
